St. Peter's History and Governance

St. Peter's Evangelical Church was founded by German settlers in the Washington
area in 1844.  The present sanctuary building and steeple were completed in 1868.
The bricks were made from nearby clay pits; each column is a single tree trunk.
There have been 25 senior pastors in the congregation's 162-year history.

The United Church of Christ was formed in 1957 with the union of the
Congregational, Christian, Evangelical and Reformed denominations.  The structure
of the UCC is based on the local congregation.  St. Peter's is governed by a
12-person Church Council, elected by members of the congregation.

St. Peter's also has many Church Boards and Church Standing Committees
that help manage the wonderful missions of this church.
